CECI-GRIFE Seminar Series IV

CECI-GRIFE Seminar Series IV

We are delighted to invite you to the CECI-GRIFE Seminar Series IV, titled "CULTURAL-HISTORICAL ACTIVITY THEORY AS A RESOURCE IN THE STUDY OF GRADUATE-TO-WORK TRANSITIONS”.

Seeing the individual graduate as insufficiently prepared or motivated is a common approach to the problems of graduate-to-work transitions. It is an example of what Chater and Loewenstein (2023) call individualist frame (i-frame), arguing for a shift to a systemic perspective (s-frame). The problem with many systemic approaches is, however, that they leave unanswered the question of agency: Who will change the system and how? Cultural-historical activity theory is unique in that it focuses on transformations driven by contradictions within and between activity systems. In graduate-to-work transitions, multiple activity systems interact. Impactful solutions require analysis of key contradictions between and within activity systems that play key roles in the transitions. To turn contradictions into expansive learning, it is important to identify which activity systems experience the contradictions most urgently. In expansive learning, existing conditions and categories are questioned and transformed. Thus, solutions need to go beyond matching graduates with existing jobs, to include creation of new work and new jobs.
