GRIFE Finnish Education and Global Perspectives Seminar Series XXVI

GRIFE Finnish Education and Global Perspectives Seminar Series XXVI

We are delighted to invite you to the upcoming GRIFE Seminar Series XXVI, titled " Play Matters: Why more play can save our schools?”.”.

Over the past three decades, the role of play in schools has steadily declined as education systems have become increasingly focused on testing, performance, and academic competition. Play is often treated as a reward after “real work” is completed, rather than recognised as an essential part of meaningful learning. In this seminar, drawing on my research and professional work in Finland, I will argue that play is not the opposite of learning; it is one of its most effective natural forms. One enduring Finnish lesson is that the more children play, the more they learn. Using international research and practical examples, I will show how play can help schools achieve multiple goals at once: deeper learning, better engagement, greater creativity, healthier relationships, and improved student wellbeing. I will conclude by suggesting simple ways to help children play more in and out of school.
